GC4W Honors Chelsea Miller as Female Icon on International Women’s Day

Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world is the UN Women’s theme for this year’s international women’s day celebration. To celebrate the milestones of women in leadership on international women’s day, GC4W honors Stacy London, Kara Goldin, Senator Pat Spearman, Renu Hooda, Chelsea Miller, Fran Hauser, and April Franzino as GC4W Female Icons in Business and Social Leadership.

“Today we know our history.”-Chelsea Miller

Chelsea Miller, Co-Founder, Freedom March NYC

Industry: Activism

Summary: Chelsea Miller is a social-impact entrepreneur and public speaker who grew up in Flatbush and East New York, Brooklyn, New York. She was already well acquainted with the many manifestations of systemic racism, but it was the outcry and protests over the police killing of George Floyd that put Miller, just twenty-three years of age, at the head of mass demonstrations virtually overnight. On Independence Day 2020, she shared a thought-provoking quote addressing the diverse crowd of young people that had followed her through the streets from Madison Square Park, chanting, and drumming. “Today we know our history,” she declared,. “Today we are reminded of a delayed promise by this America — a promise that says independence, freedom, and justice for all. But are we all free?” In 2016, Miller was one of the youngest interns in the Obama White House working on domestic policy. She went on to start her own nonprofit Women Everywhere Believe, a national leadership pipeline for women and girls of color. She told Rolling Stone she had always been passionate about creating more opportunities for young Black girls. Miller said her activism wasn’t just about being on the front lines, but about taking a 360 approach. “We work on policy, civic engagement, voter mobilization and just amplifying the message using digital organizing.”
