The Global Connections for Women Foundation is hosting the GC4W Wellness Week Virtual Experience from Monday, November 7th through Friday, November 11th, 2022. This invitation is to invite you and your employees to participate in meaningful conversations and best practices on corporate wellbeing and belonging, wellness at work, wellness at home, mental health, and more.

Wellness is intentionally adopting and practicing healthy habits to achieve optimal physical and mental health. This makes all the difference between just surviving and thriving. With concerns of burnout and the rise of mental health concerns within the corporate world, many employers are finding ways to address mental well-being. Equally, employees are also beginning to prioritize wellness in their careers and personal lives. In light of this, wellness and corporate wellbeing have become a priority for us as an organization that creates programs that champion employee engagement and empowerment.

Denise Francis is a vibrant and brilliant young lady who, at the age of 9, knew that her path would lead her to create a wellness program for underserved communities. She got admission to her dream school, NYU Gallatin School to pursue her Master’s degree in Wellness, and faced severe financial challenges, which made her put her dream of completion on hold.

The Global Connections for Women Foundation believes in women and girls and their rights to create new opportunities for themselves and their communities. Inspired by Denise’s story and circumstance, we created a scholarship fund to help her get to the finish line of completing her degree at NYU Gallatin School. We hope that our generous donors will give to our new scholarship fund.

GC4W caught up with Denise Francis, and the following are her responses to our interview questions. The interview below is an opportunity for you also to get to know Denise Francis, her story, her challenges, her accomplishments, and her goals.

Tell us about your story: My name is Denise Francis. I am a TEDx Speaker, Educator, Author, and Award-winning founder of The Self Love Organization Inc. The Self Love Organization is the Digital Wellness platform for Black Women to Heal. We make wellness and therapy accessible by creating healing tools and experiences to heal black women. I am dedicated to changing the narrative of the “strong” Black woman to the “healed” Black woman. My work is focused on bridging the gap between Self Love and Mental Health with what I found lies in between the two constructs, Self-Guided Therapy.

At the NYU Gallatin Graduate School of Individualized study, I proposed a new concentration and once completed I will be the first woman to receive a masters in the concentration of Self-love, Self-Therapy and the Black Mental Health Experience. I believe that Self-love is a skill, if mastered it could be the missing preventative measure to fight against common mental health issues within the Black community. I believe there is a gap between Self-love, wellness and mental health that could be impactful to the black mental health experience. Wellness is an unexplored genre of healing. I am interested in getting my masters in Wellness to be the solution and add black wellness to the Black mental health care experience.

How was your first semester at NYU Gallatin school: My first semester at the NYU Gallatin School was eye-opening. My program is unique and allows me to take classes throughout all the disciplines offered at NYU to curate and develop my thesis. It was all I had imagined it to be! I started developing my thesis through new concepts I found in my African studies and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy classes. I felt like I was on the right path!

Why did you stop going to school: After only one semester, I had to leave my dream school and program because I could no longer afford my tuition. This was extremely disheartening. As an only child to a single Jamaican immigrant parent, I worked hard to find funding. Although I was granted the NYU Gallatin Scholarship and received the highest loan the school offered at the time, it simply was not enough to cover my tuition. I tried speaking to the dean of financial aid, I spoke to multiple advisors and wrote multiple letters, however despite my efforts I was unable to finish my studies at NYU.

What message would you like to share with our donors: I am humbled by the support from the Global Connections for Women Foundation and its donors. I am dedicated to my mission to heal black women, heal the black community and impact the black mental health experience with wellness. This master’s degree is a dream come true and has the capability to affect an entire community and generation. Joining me on my mission to add mental health and wellness to the conversation of healing and mental health in conversations that builds the communities of the underserved and underrepresented. Anything else you would like to add: Join me on my mission to heal generations!
